Radical Urbild 1984

Mark Farner surfs down a slope in the Hoch-Ybrig ski area on the very first Radical snowboard in 1984.
The only place where snowboarding was allowed, while it was forbidden everywhere else.

Radical No. 1 - The first snowboard

The Radical No.1: Built by Mark Farner in 1984.
Back then, snowboarding was still in its infancy in Switzerland and the scene was so small that everyone knew each other personally.
The board can still be seen here without bindings.
Fun fact: over 200 people learned to snowboard on this board!

Binding & shoes

The snowboard scene in 1984 was still young, and suitable bindings were hard to find.
So they helped themselves and built their first bindings.
The boot is a soft hiking boot.

… and what seems so natural here was an absolute exception!
Snowboarders were forbidden and not welcome almost everywhere – except in Hoch-Ybrig.
People were cool there right from the start.

1985 - Construction begins

Shapes were further refined and the production of custom-made products took off.
Orders from enthusiastic snowboarders became more and more frequent.

In the meantime, the first snowboard with a P-Tex running surface and edges was built in 1985 – a world first.

1986 - Time for competitions

The first snowboard races were launched, including the Swiss Championships in 1986 with an international star cast.

1987 - World Championship St. Moritz

The Radical Snowboarding Club Zurich achieves the unbelievable: The first snowboarding world championship on European soil – in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

1988 - Boards for professionals worldwide

Radical specializes in custom boards, also for athletes from other brands.
Numerous World Cup and World Championship victories have been won with boards from Sims, Nidecker and Vision.

1990 - Start of carbon Kevlar construction

Another milestone was the first carbon-kevlar construction.
The future trademark was born: durable and dynamic boards.

2000 - Surf 222cm

The longest board in the world – The world’s longest production snowboard was created after several custom-made one-offs.

2004 - Radical Ski

The range was expanded to include skis and the first collection appeared.
This was a response to the growing demand from snowboarders who also wanted to ski.

2012 - Radical Splitboard

With the Lion, Radical brings an outstanding splitboard onto the market that hits the spot.
It was probably the lightest splitboard on the market at the time.

2013 - Radical Tours

Under the direction of Niki Huwyler as a professional guide, guided splitboard tours are offered to promote the sport and give participants a safe introduction to splitboarding.

Radical Sports presents the lightest splitboard in the world for its 30th anniversary.

NZZ (2014)

The “last of the Mohicans” in the domestic ski industry Thanks to direct sales, Stöckli is the only major Swiss ski manufacturer to have survived.
Smaller manufacturers such as Zurich-based Radical are trying to find a niche in the consolidated and globalized ski market by offering exclusivity.
